Hawaii State Civil Defense Urban Search and Rescue Canine Unit: Veterinarians needed to provide support

The Hawaii State Civil Defense, Urban Search and Rescue Canine Unit is one component of the State's Disaster Response Team. Its primary mission is disaster response (searching for people missing in bombings, hurricanes and floods). However the canine unit also trains dogs to search for missing dementia patients, lost children, missing hikers, and others in both urban and wilderness settings.

The Canine unit is made up entirely of volunteers and veterinarians in the community are needed to help provide annual vaccinations, treatment of training injuries, basic health care for the search dogs.

The Canine unit could also use canine first aid kits and decontamination supplies, veterinarians who can deploy in the field and veterinarians who can provide back up hospital support on all the islands.

If you or your clinic can provide assistance please contact Sharon Walden, Canine Unit & Search Element Leader at HawaiiK9SAR@aol.com or 232-4422.

Mahalo!
